Biometric Access Control
What does it mean?
Biometrics can be summed up in a simple term: authentication. Your finger (and its DNA) is secure, private and authentic. It can’t be lost, stolen or borrowed. And you’ll always have your finger with you as you access each location. e-DATA Biometrics combines the benefits of “perfect mobility” (nothing to carry or remember) with “perfect security” (a unique credential that let’s only authorized individuals in the door). It is the one solution that serves both requirements.
Another way to look at biometrics is what it doesn’t require: management of cards, keys and PIN codes. Not only is this a time-consuming effort but it can be a costly one, involving card inventory, reissuance and retrieval; lock and key changes during high turnover; and recoding or simply remembering a host of PINs.
How does it work?
Only specific characteristics, which are unique to every fingerprint, are filtered and saved as an encrypted biometric key. No image is saved, only a series of numbers (a binary code), which is used for verification. The algorithm cannot be reconverted to an image, so no one can duplicate your fingerprints.
Why isn’t it widely used?
Traditionally, you have to install and manage two separate systems: one for biometrics and one for access control. So you needed software, hardware and a computer for your biometric system; and software, hardware and server for your access control system. e-DATA changes that by combining biometrics and access control in one fully scalable system.
And e-DATA Biometric Access Control requires no server or software. Everything is embedded in the devices, making installation as easy as running wire.
How do I gain access?
The embedded software used for setting up user profiles and schedules is accessed over the Web through any standard browser from anywhere in the world.
When used with e-DATA Biometric Access Control, the Fingerprint Key biometric reader allows fingerprint template distribution (propagation) to other readers within the network. Users simply enroll once at any Fingerprint Key, and their template can then be sent to any reader in the system based upon individual access rights, from any location. Plus, an integrated solution from e-DATA records all access events and provides detailed audits and reporting.
